At a time in history with the uncertainties we are currently experiencing, the increasing need to switch off and relax has led to the abandonment of minimalism, and a push towards the exact opposite, i.e. layering, maximalism, playfulness and irony, opening the door to the broad theme of play.

What better way is there of distancing yourself from the struggles of day-to-day life than projecting yourself into the certainties of past traditions? This may be a literary cliché but it is undoubtedly effective – the hideaway of anti-modernity, providing us with what we already know, reassuring us and filling us with a period of inner wellbeing.
